Paul considers everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake he has lost all things, calling his former achievements "garbage" or "rubbish" in comparison. Paul deems these things "refuse" or "excrement" since the strength of the word is hardly an accident, expressing not just willingness to pay a price but revulsion at what he once prized.
