There's no doubt, no question in his voice—just bold and clear, "I am the good shepherd." And what does this good shepherd do for his sheep, his followers, his disciples? He lays down his life for them. The term "good" (kalos) suggests not just moral goodness but the ideal, the perfect example of a shepherd. This claim is separate from the "I am" statement made earlier (John 10:7–9). It is also a separate analogy—related, but not identical, to the first two Jesus spoke in this chapter.
