The timing is significant—during this festival, massive lamps would be lit using wicks made from priestly garments, and light was a powerful metaphor in Hebrew thinking representing salvation, knowledge, and goodness. Jesus promises that whoever follows Him will never walk in darkness but will have "the light of life"—meaning not just knowledge but vibrant, transforming spiritual life. Jesus was THE Light, but to those who followed Him (disciples), He gave them the privilege and the power to be the Lights of the world, making believers reflectors of His brilliance.
