John 3:16-21 comes from Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee who came to Jesus seeking understanding about entering God's kingdom. Written by the apostle John as part of his Gospel account, this passage contains arguably the most famous verse in all of Scripture, often called "the gospel in a nutshell." John 3:16 has been termed as "the golden text of the Bible", "the gospel in a nutshell", and "everyman's text" because it captures the essence of the Christian message in a single statement.
