Philip latches onto the idea of seeing God. What's described here is not a moment of stupidity. Philip is not being dense—Jesus referred to "knowing" God, then switched to a comment about "seeing" God. Philip thinks of some revelation of the glory of God as that vouchsafed to Moses, or it may be of a vision like that which three of their number had seen in the Mount of Transfiguration.
