Genesis 16:1-6 presents a deeply human story of impatience, desperation, and the painful consequences of trying to fulfill God's promises through human effort. Written by Moses as part of the patriarchal narratives, this passage occurs ten years after God's initial promise to Abraham that he would become a great nation. Since they still had no children, Sarai convinces Abram to have a child through Hagar. A son would be a legal heir according to the customs at that time.
