In telling this parable, Jesus invites the Pharisees to change their way of relating to the sinner. The parable describes a shepherd who leaves ninety-nine sheep to search for one lost sheep until he finds it, then joyfully carries it home on his shoulders and invites friends and neighbors to celebrate with him. Many rabbis of that time believed that God received the sinner who came to Him the right way.
