John initially protests, recognizing Jesus' superiority and saying he needs to be baptized by Jesus instead. Jesus said to him in reply, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Jesus was baptized to fulfill all righteousness, meaning Jesus came to live a law-obedient life, fulfilling the Old Covenant through perfect obedience to its commands, and also to identify with sinners as part of His redemptive mission.
