You Are Chosen:

Love You Don’t Have to Earn

You are chosen. You are loved. Your life matters.

Chosen? Loved? Even when I’m tired, slowing down, and not doing nearly as much as I used to?

That’s the news Paul opens with in his letter to the church in Thessalonica (1 Thessalonians 1:1-10). He calls them beloved, chosen by God. And notice what comes first. Before he says a word about their hard work, their faith, or the example they’ve set, he tells them they belong.

Here’s the part that gets me. Paul doesn’t say “you’ll be chosen once you’ve done enough.” He says it’s already true. Think of it as a seat at the table. Your chair has your name on it. You didn’t have to bring a casserole to earn it. It’s yours whether you’re carrying the serving dishes or just sitting down to be fed.

So what does that look like in real life?

Love comes before the doing

So many of us spend our lives taking care of other people. We raise families, serve our communities, and keep everything running. Those things matter, but they were never the price of admission.

So what happens when we can’t do as much as we used to? When we need to rest, accept help, or let somebody else take the lead? Does the chair get taken away? It does not. God loves us when we’re working hard, and God loves us when we need to rest.

You don’t have to prove your worth to keep your seat.

Small things travel farther than you think

Think of someone who made a difference for you. Maybe a teacher who believed in you, a friend who listened when things were hard, or someone who welcomed you when you felt out of place. They may not even remember that moment. But you do.

That’s how everyday faith works. A phone call, a prayer, a listening ear, a card in the mail, an invitation to come along. We may never know how far those little things travel. We don’t have to change the world in one big moment. We just have to keep showing up with a little faith, a little love, and a little hope.

Gratitude shows us what’s still possible

Life doesn’t always follow our plans. Dreams change, familiar roles shift, and sometimes we have to let someone else take the wheel. That can be frustrating, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise.

But gratitude isn’t about pretending life is easy. It’s about noticing that even when things are complicated, there are still gifts on the table. Maybe a ride from a friend turns into a conversation you’d have missed. Maybe asking for help makes a relationship stronger. Maybe a change in routine opens a door to something new.

Where might joy be showing up that you didn’t expect?

Let someone pass you the dish

A church needs people who serve, organize, and lead. It also needs people who share wisdom, offer encouragement, listen with care, and help others feel welcome. And not every season looks the same.

Sometimes we give our time and energy. Sometimes we offer a prayer or a kind word. And sometimes the most faithful thing we can do is let someone else care for us. When you accept help, you give someone else the chance to share their gifts, too.

Love isn’t only about what we pass around the table. It’s also about being willing to receive.

The invitation

Being chosen by God isn’t one more item on an already-full to-do list. It’s the promise that you belong, that your life has meaning, and that love is still possible right where you are.
You’re allowed to rest. You’re allowed to receive help. You’re allowed to celebrate the life you’ve already lived. And there’s still grace to receive, hope to discover, and love to share.
Pull up a chair.

You are chosen. You are loved. And your life still matters.
