John 13:1-17; Philippians 2:6-8
The act of foot washing depicted in John teaches us about God’s character of service, grace, love and calls us to humility. Not only is our Creator God all powerful, but also gentle and capable of humility with us demonstrating his great love.
John recounts Jesus acts during the “Seder” meal (seder means the order the service) when Jesus gets up from the meal and proceeds to wash the disciples feet as if it were part of the Passover Seder meal, which it is not. It is also during this meal that Jesus instituted what we now know as Holy Communion. Washing feet is a tremendous act of service and humility and to picture our Lord and Savior kneeling on the floor in front of us is also humbling. This is truly the character of the God who calls us to follow him. Are you ready?
