I Believe

Acts 2:14, 22-32

The Nicene Creed is important because it grounds us into one of the essentials of faith; the Holy Trinity. It spells out the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, the nature of God and the Holy Spirit and the co-equal nature and unity of God. It is a way for us to understand how God interacts and to see his character in human terms.

The Creed, along with the Apostle’s Creed is one of the ways in which we understand the basics of our faith and remain connected to the larger body of believers around the world. When the council formed in 325, it wasn’t to “create” the creed, but rather formally adopted what was already being taught and believed since the days of the Apostles.

We may choose other ways of worship and belief (traditions) but if we abandon the heart of our faith over tradition, we loose the essential elements of our faith. The Creed, along with the Apostle’s Creed, grounds us and establishes the essentials of the Christian belief. Beyond the creeds, we have room to build tradition and practices that are not in contradiction to the essentials.
