Called Out of the Country

Called Out of the Country

Psalm 121:1-2, 8; Matthew 4:18-22

This is Western Sunday and as we have fun doing something, a bit different than normal we can draw attention from the lyrics of Country Western songs and their authentic perspective of life and hope in the human condition. Then, we can see the authenticity of a God incarnated in Jesus who comes from humble beginnings to deal with the reality of our lives.

Some other religions paint a vastly different picture of God, if they even recognize a ‘supreme being.’ God may be detached, judgmental, uninvolved and humanity struggles to understand how to please such a god and how to be accepted. The reality of our faith is much different and country western music and culture helps us to see that difference. There is a humble, down-to-earth reality in country western and this is how we see Jesus. He comes from the humble no-where village of Nazareth, he lives in the region of Galilee; the “out west” of the first century and he teaches a simple way of living that is authentic and real.

“Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little.” ~Edmund Burke
