Heifer International Success Story

Heifer Success Here is another Heifer animal fact. Alpaca Fleece comes in 22 natural colors that result in more than 300 shades. Now let’s visit the life of Pedro Mateo Lopez of Honduras. Pedro lived a very tough life in 1998, Hurricane Mitch destroyed his village. He and his family escaped to a remote outpost, but the soil there could produce only a few carrots and some cabbage. After feeding his family, there was little left. However, Pedro would take…

Heifer Update for August 31, 2019

Heifer Animals Are Amazing!  Did You Know? Ducks can sleep with one eye open to watch for predators.  They can even turn off half of their brain while keeping the other half alert. The east African nations of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe were hit hard in late March by Cyclone Idai.  Whole villages were swept away leaving many families without homes, without livestock and livelihoods.  There were no reported injuries or deaths to Heifer Project participants or staff.  A small…

Heifer International

Heifer International It was 75 years ago  –  Dan West  had  a vision – as he passed out cups of milk to refugees, he had this thought, “They don’t need a cup of milk, they need a cow.”  So Heifer International was born.  “Faith” was the  first  Heifer donated.  In March of 2018, LUMM donated the Heifer “Love” which was given by Missions & Outreach. In April the LUMM sent “Hope” and “Joy” on their way.  And then there were…

Heifer Update for August 24, 2019

Heifer Update Georgina lives in Chiapas, Mexico.  Her day starts at 3:00 a.m. when she turns on the lights in her chicken coops.  She has learned the hens lay more eggs with the light.  At 6:00 a.m. she is on the bus to town with dozens of yesterday’s eggs.  At 8:30 a.m. she opens the covers on the sunrise side of her coops.  At 9:30 she opens the doors so they can roam and forage on bugs and grass.  Then…

Heifer Update for August 17, 2019

Heifer Update Let’s visit Bihar today.  It is in northwestern India, and one of India’s poorest states.  Heifer is working a project in five districts of Bihar, providing goats to empower poor farmers there.  Sharada Devi, a mother of 8, was one of among 4,000 residents to receive a goat.  She had been working for little as nothing on other farms.  Her husband was forced to travel 800 miles to find suitable work.  Even then, they barely survived.  They could…

Heifer Ark Project for August 10, 2019

Heifer Ark Project After an absolutely exciting month in which we donated 2 Gift Arks, more exciting things happened.  We had funds to do the above – 2 Llamas, 2 Trios of Rabbits and 2 Gifts of Honeybees.  Praise God! The visit to Heifer International Headquarters in Little Rock, AR and the visit to Heifer Ranch in Perryville, AR were amazing.  In going through their numerous displays, it was very evident that after the hunger and poverty issues were resolved,…

Heifer Update for August 3, 2019

Heifer Update June 2019 – WHAT A MONTH THAT WAS! First, the response to the Gift Ark was (and still is) fantastic.  In 4 short weeks $5000 of funds were raised to donate our Gift Ark.  Then there was the match from the foundation.  Well, Gift Ark # 2 was donated last Wednesday.  A potential of 504 families lifting themselves out of hunger and poverty.  I applaud you all. So what’s next?  Well, there are 4 months left of the…

Heifer Report for July 27, 2019

Heifer Ranch The 1200-acre ranch is located in the foothills of the Quachita mountains in Perryville, Arkansas.  This is a working ranch along with an educational center.  Here you can work with the ranch hands, doing day-to-day tasks on a small-scale agricultural operation. The barn features many of the animals that we donate regularly.  During the proper seasons, pig farrowing and lambing can be witnessed and can be participated in. Most is the Global Village. It is a collection of…

Heifer Report for July 20, 2019

Heifer Report Last Friday we visited the headquarters of Heifer International in Little Rock, Arkansas. Because of the construction and materials used, the building uses 52% less energy than a conventional building of the same size. Heifer uses graywater, rainwater captured in a collection tower, to supply non-consumable water. The windows allow the staff to work in natural light. Sensors adjust the lighting based on the darkness outside.  In 2007 Heifers Headquarters achieved the highest “Green Building” rating possible. Behind…

Well, those oxen are very close to the top.  Currently we are at 47.07% of our goal of $5000 for the Gift Ark. And what comes after that?  The LUMC Foundation will donate a complete ark.  How wonderful.  This week will be an exciting one for the Steen’s.  On Friday the 12th Joyce and I will be touring the Heifer International Headquarters in Little Rock, AR.  Also, on that day we will visit the Heifer Urban Farm.  Then on Saturday…
