Have you experienced a similar situation when giving your young child medicine, battling to cram it down his or her throat to treat an infection? The scripture passage for this week paints the image of God as a loving parent who cares and loves…

This letter is written in response to a “Colossian heresy.” Although the scholars differ on specifics, certain issues are clear: Some in the Colossian church adhered to a kind of mysticism that questioned the completeness of Christ’s revelation. The  writer emphasizes that Jesus fully embodied…

A New Standard

Amos 7:7-9 I love gadgets. Always have, always will. You can imagine my excitement when I saw the newest laser level on sale. Having just moved, I had boxes of pictures and other wall hangings just waiting to be unpacked and hung. Surely this tool would do the trick! Minutes later, I was at home shooting the little red beam on every flat surface of my house. It even curved around corners if you tilted it at just the proper…

It’s Not About Us

Galatians 6:11-16 People willingly accept traditions – until they find out they may have to change their old habits. We are also more than willing to have others follow the traditions we have approved. Persons in the church sometimes try to force others to accept particular traditions. In Galatia, a group of law-observant Jews are pressing the Gentiles to be circumcised, a Jewish rite. And yet for Paul that physical distinction has no bearing on the Gentiles’ acceptance of Christ…
